Greetings and Welcome!
Man, am I lucky! I have a career that I just love--a children's author. It encompasses all of my favorite things--reading, story-telling, and kids.
As a writer, I don't write books about kids who step through time portals or use magical powers. I write about really decent kids--ordinary and extraordinary at the same time--who find themselves in difficult circumstances and find ways to walk themselves out of it.
I strive to create characters that step off of the page. For me (as a reader or writer) storytelling is about character and emotion; this is where the heart of a story lives, I think. These are the things that leave readers carrying a character with them long after the book has been closed.
My first MG novel entitled, ONE FOR THE MURPHYS was released by Nancy Paulsen Books (Penguin Books for Young Readers) in spring, 2012.
It is also the winner of the Tassy Walden Awards for New Voices in Children's Literature (Sponsored by the Shoreline Arts Alliance, with the generous support of Jack and Helen Davis as well as Barnes and Noble Booksellers.)
My next middle grade novel, ALPHABET SOUP, is under contract with Nancy Paulsen Books (Penguin). YEAH!!
It will be released in spring, 2014.
Also proud to be a contributing author to BREAK THESE RULES (Chicago Review Press, 2013) an anthology of first-person accounts from leading authors for teens (including Sara Zarr, Kathryn Erskine, A. S. King and Gary Schmidt, and many others), from which all royalties will be donated to the Children's Defense Fund.
I am represented by the fabulous Erin Murphy of The Erin Murphy Literary Agency.
